The Center is a 501(c)(3) organization that is developing the reference architecture for the seamless exchange of data between all medical devices and electronic health records. The members include for-profit, non-profit, and government hospital systems across the country, including the three largest (HCA, Ascension, Community Health Systems). The members have the combined procurement power to force the adoption of interoperability from manufacturers and data companies. Vendors have acknowledged that they will follow the requirements issued by the Center in order to sell their products and services to all of the member hospital systems. The Center has also developed a trusted wireless health infrastructure that will enable medical devices to operate wirelessly. Medical centers are starting to deploy that wireless network design with assistance from the Center.
